We are currently advertising for two positions at The Merstham Mix – Front of House Assistant and Lead Chef. Please find details of both roles below!

Front of House Assistant (closing date 22nd April)

Are you interested in being part of a great community team?  The Merstham Mix Café is looking for Front of House staff who will offer a warm welcome and great customer service to visitors and customers at their community hub.

The busy café serves tea, coffee, cake and a range of hot meals as part of a delicious daily menu using, in part, food acquired through redistribution schemes.  The café is situated in a diverse community within Merstham, Redhill and is part of a larger facility which hosts the local library, pre-school, events, classes and group activities.

The Front of House person will work alongside a team of volunteers, with responsibility for welcoming guests to the café, directing volunteers and providing excellent customer service.

The Role

  • To welcome café users, take orders and serve food as required
  • Prepare and serve hot beverages using the barista coffee machine
  • Delivery of excellent customer service
  • Co-ordinating and supporting a diverse team of volunteers who work in the café (including those with learning difficulties)
  • Handling money and daily till reconciliation
  • Cleaning duties as required
  • Set up, stock and maintain the counter display and chiller cabinet
  • Being conscious of cost and menu pricing so that meals are appropriately priced according to the needs of the consumer and the operational costs of the cafe
  • Escalating customer concerns and complaints to management
  • Complying with relevant safety, hygiene and service standards and procedures

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years’ experience within a customer interfacing role
  • Experience within catering and hospitality is desired
  • Café/restaurant service experience is preferable, although full training is provided
  • Highly proficient in spoken and written English
  • Maths GCSE/confident working with numbers
  • Food hygiene Certificate Level 2 (not compulsory)

Remuneration

This is a permanent part time role, with a three month probation period.

Salary meets national minimum wage, dependent on experience, paid monthly PAYE.

Holiday, pension and café benefits are available on successful completion of a three month probation period.

Hours of Work

The café is open between 8am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday and 8.30am-2.30pm Saturdays

Shifts and hours to be agreed.

Inventive Lead Chef Healthy Food (closing date 29th March)

Interested in creating good food while reducing food waste? The Merstham Mix café is looking for a Lead Chef to create a wholesome and delicious daily menu for the local community using food acquired through redistribution schemes.

The busy café serves tea, coffee, cake and a range of meals. Situated in a diverse community within Merstham, Redhill, the café is part of a larger facility which hosts the local library, events, classes and group activities.

The Chef will lead the kitchen and have full responsibility for planning the daily ‘specials’, as well as batch preparing food for future use. They will be responsible for keeping inventory of stock and making purchasing decisions along with the General Manager of the café. The Chef will work with, manage and lead supporting staff including both paid and a team of volunteers.

The Role

  • To implement a menu to meet the needs, culture and tastes of the café users.
  • Work closely with the team to develop a healthy, nutritious menu to promote health and wellbeing through food choices.
  • Managing, motivating, training and supporting the kitchen team to actively engage in the delivery of the menu.
  • Identifying suitable suppliers and maintaining stock supplies.
  • Preparation of meals on a daily basis, as well as batch preparing foods for future use.
  • Being conscious of costs and menu pricing so that meals are appropriately priced according to the needs of the consumer along with the operational costs of the café.
  • Ensuring the kitchen is run efficiently and professionally at all times, with a key focus on organisation.
  • Ensuring food and facility certification including health and safety procedures and routines are adhered to at all times.
  • Managing and minimising waste of food, and that any waste that is produced is disposed of correctly.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of five years experience holding the role of Senior Chef/Head Chef
  • Minimum of two years experience within catering and hospitality in a customer facing role
  • Food hygiene training and certification issued within last ten years
  • Experience of working within a community engagement project
  • Highly proficient in spoken and written English

Remuneration

This is a Permanent Full-Time role, with a three month probation period. The hours are 7:30am to 4pm Monday to Friday with an unpaid daily lunch break of one hour.

Salary – up to £10 per hour, dependent on experience, paid monthly PAYE.

Holiday, pension and café benefits are available on successful completion of a three month probation period.
